It’s fun to watch, even if it doesn’t make a ton of sense.

On the plus side, the Gohan/Frieza fighting here was pretty well animated. Goku’s clearly not hurt, and he clearly doesn’t want Gohan hanging around here, so why did he wait so long to reveal himself? Having Gohan step in like this just disrupts the tension of this battle. This is one of the bad examples of filler, where most of the plot holes can be explained by the fact that they wanted to do a filler scene. Frieza told Gohan he planned to kill him with his full-power form just like he did his father, but that seems kind of pointless.

Gohan couldn’t sense his ki, so was he that badly hurt? Was he sneaking up on Frieza? What would be the point of that? He’s not even hurt, so apparently Frieza’s last attack didn’t even bother him, so why bother with stealth?Ĭoincidentally, Frieza jacked himself back up to full power right before Goku returned, just so the scene would be reset for the end of this filler. I have no idea what Goku was up to this whole time. Then Goku shows up and angrily reminds him that he’s supposed to be leaving the planet, not checking up on him. Frieza even catches on to Gohan’s stall tactics, and he still toys with him, despite the planet’s impending doom. Gohan’s plan is actually pretty smart, because he’s figured out how Frieza thinks. He thinks Goku is dead, and Gohan’s easy pickings, so why should he stay at full power any longer than necessary? And he’d absolutely waste time picking on Gohan, because he took his sweet time toying with the others. It’s totally in-character for Frieza to do this. But now that I’ve been watching all these episodes, I’ve come around on the idea. I don’t know if he’s using 50% or some other number, but it always seemed kind of dumb to me that he’d weaken himself like this. The one thing that always bugged me about this episode is that Frieza obliges Gohan and powers down from his roided up 100%-power form. What makes him think an exploding planet would kill Frieza when a Spirit Bomb and a Super Saiyan haven’t worked? Uh… well, he’s five, so I guess he doesn’t need to have thought it through that far. How does Gohan even know the planet is going to explode? Bulma figured it out from the sensor data on the ship, which seems a little odd. In case you’re wondering, this whole side-battle is pure filler. That chance is basically to keep Frieza so distracted that he forgets to leave the planet before it explodes. But if he faces him here on Namek, then there’s a small chance he can win. He figures that Freiza wants to kill all the Saiyans, and he’s the last one, so if he goes back to Earth, Frieza will just follow him and probably destroy it. So Gohan tells Bulma to take Piccolo and head back to Earth without him.
Gohan seems to think so, since he can’t sense his father’s ki, and with Goku being a Super Saiyan and all, it’s usually pretty hard not to sense it. You generally don’t want to fly into the Kamehameha (Cooler notwithstanding), but Frieza has some sort of pink force field around him, so I guess it works.Īlso, in the end, he just slipped off the path of Goku’s beam and swerved around to hit Goku, so I guess that’s a point for melee attacks.įrieza ends up hitting Goku so hard that he drives him deep into the ground, and a volcano erupts from the hole, so that’s gotta finish Goku off, right? This seems kind of counterintuitive to me. Only Frieza just flew directly into Goku’s Kamehameha instead of firing his own beam attack. Last time, Goku and Frieza were setting up some sort of climactic showdown, kind of like the Kamehameha/Gallick Gun beam struggle from the Goku/Vegeta fight.
